Laser 101
Our goal for this informal, hands on participation class, is to introduce you to several laser types, their functions, and the various applications they can be used for in the construction industry. We will discuss the basic flat lasers to the more compound slope lasers available in the market today. You will learn how to check and protect your work, including accuracy. This session will cover everything you need to know about construction lasers, from applications to troubleshooting and calibrations! To wrap it all up, we will address OSHA requirements and discuss common misconceptions about lasers in the field today.
I Introduction
Laser History, Tube vs Diode, Red vs Green, Visible vs Invisible
II Types of Construction Lasers
Flat, Single Slope, Dual Slope, Pipe Lasers, Interior & Pocket Lasers
III Applications
Pipe Laying, Grading, Grading Parking Lots, Vertical, Plumb, & Squaring
IV Calibrations/Accuracy
How to check a laser to see if it is ‘off’ and how to calibrate it in the field
V Calculating Grade & Slopes
How to judge and distinguish slope for pipe lasers
VI Troubleshooting in the Field
How to determine whether you are adding (going up) or subtracting (going down) to get the correct grade. Understanding your hand held detector and its’ working tolerances. How self leveling actually works (get your laser to spin). Where grade is on your laser.
VII Safety Issues
What does OSHA really require? Do you really have to use safety cards?
